Parent Information

Academic Assessment Services conduct tests for students entering schools at certain year levels. These tests are for a particular purpose such as tracking student progress. We also conduct scholarship testing for schools.

Academic Assessment Services provide educational testing ONLY to schools. We do not provide individual student assessment for parents.

Types of Tests

Placement Tests

These tests are for students already guaranteed enrolment at a school. The School may wish to gain a common benchmark for new students to enable class placements:

  • Identify students for extension or support

  • Inform curriculum development

  • Track particular trends in the School’s population.

In many cases schools will report the outcome of these tests to parents in a customised report.

Entrance Tests

These tests are used where there is competitive entry to a school. An offer of enrolment depends on a student’s performance in the tests.

These tests are often more demanding than tests for placement purposes and are usually appropriate for students of above-average ability.

Gifted and Talented Tests

These are tests for competitive entry to a school’s specialised programs. An offer of selection within these programs depends on a student’s performance in the tests. These tests are often more demanding than tests for placement purposes and are usually appropriate for students of superior academic ability. The framework for all tests is similar.

They usually consist of:

  • General ability test

  • Mathematics test

  • Reading comprehension test

  • Test of written expression.

In some cases certain schools will vary the testing components.

Scholarship Tests

Scholarship tests are designed to identify and distinguish between students of high academic ability. They are more difficult than the normal achievement tests students often take in schools.

They are timed tests assessing how clearly a student can demonstrate higher-order critical thinking skills.
